Jacobite rising of 1715

1715–1716 · 18th century · Also known as Fifteen, Jacobite rebellion of 1715

The Jacobite rising of 1715 was an attempt by James Francis Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender, to take the British throne from George I. The Earl of Mar raised the Jacobite standard in Scotland, but the indecisive Battle of Sheriffmuir and the surrender at Preston in November 1715 ended its momentum. James arrived too late and left for France in February 1716.
