James Francis Edward Stuart

1688–1766 · 18th century · Also known as the Old Pretender

James Francis Edward Stuart, known as the Old Pretender, was the son of the Catholic James II of England and the Jacobite claimant to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland. His birth in 1688 helped provoke the Glorious Revolution, and he was raised in exile in France. The Act of Settlement excluded him, and the rising of 1715 in his name failed. He died in Rome.
