Jacques Pronis

Jacques Pronis was a French agent of the Compagnie de l'Orient who in 1643 established a trading post in south-east Madagascar. He founded Fort-Dauphin, named after the future Louis XIV, in the lands of the Antanosy. His harsh rule provoked mutiny among the settlers, and he was replaced by Étienne de Flacourt in 1648. The French post survived until its evacuation in 1674.
