James Erskine Murray

d. 1844 · 19th century

James Erskine Murray was a Scottish adventurer who in 1843 sailed to Borneo hoping, like James Brooke in Sarawak, to win a territory of his own. His attempt to gain trading concessions from the Sultan of Kutai on the Mahakam River ended in fighting in early 1844, in which he was killed. The incident prompted the Dutch to tighten their hold on eastern Borneo, and Kutai accepted Dutch overlordship that year.
