James III of Scotland

1452–1488 · 15th century

James III was king of Scots from 1460 to 1488, succeeding as a child after his father James II was killed at the siege of Roxburgh. His marriage to Margaret of Denmark brought Orkney and Shetland to the Scottish crown in pledge for her dowry in 1468–1469, and they were annexed in 1472. Unpopular with his nobles, he was killed after the Battle of Sauchieburn.
