Janani Luwum

1922–1977 · 20th century

Janani Luwum was Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Boga-Zaire from 1974. An Acholi, he protested against the killings of Idi Amin's regime and was arrested with two government ministers in February 1977; all three died the next day in what the government called a car accident, though he is believed to have been shot. He is commemorated as a martyr, with a statue at Westminster Abbey.
