Person
János Kádár
János Kádár was a Hungarian communist leader who headed the country from 1956 to 1988. Installed by the Soviet Union after it crushed the revolution of 1956, he oversaw harsh reprisals, including the execution of Imre Nagy. From the 1960s he relaxed controls and introduced the New Economic Mechanism of 1968, producing the relatively liberal system known as goulash communism. He was removed from power in 1988.
