Jantar Mantar

1724–1735 · 18th century

Jantar Mantar is the name of the five astronomical observatories built by Sawai Jai Singh II of Amber in the 1720s and 1730s at Jaipur, Delhi, Ujjain, Varanasi and Mathura. They consist of huge masonry instruments for measuring time and the positions of celestial bodies. The Jaipur observatory, the largest and best preserved, includes a giant sundial and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.
