Jaipur State

1128 CE – 1949 CE (approx.) · capital Jaipur

The Kachhwaha Rajput kingdom of Amber and Jaipur, a close partner of the Mughal emperors whose 18th-century ruler built the planned city of Jaipur and its observatory.

Origins

The Kachhwaha Rajputs established themselves in the Dhundhar region of eastern Rajasthan in the 11th and 12th centuries; tradition credits Dulha Rai with the founding, and Amber became their capital. Their rise began when Raja Bharmal allied with Akbar in 1562 and gave him his daughter in marriage.

Rule and society

Kachhwaha princes became leading Mughal nobles: Man Singh I was one of Akbar's chief generals and governors. Sawai Jai Singh II founded Jaipur in 1727 on a grid plan and built astronomical observatories, the Jantar Mantar, at Jaipur, Delhi and other cities. The state prospered from banking, gem cutting and trade.

Decline and legacy

Jaipur signed a treaty with the British in 1818. In 1949 Maharaja Man Singh II merged it into Greater Rajasthan, with Jaipur as the capital, and he became Rajpramukh. The city remains Rajasthan's capital.
