Jersey Royal

c. 1880 · 19th century · Also known as Jersey Royal potato

The Jersey Royal is a variety of early new potato grown in Jersey, developed around 1880 by the farmer Hugh de la Haye from an unusually large potato with many eyes. Grown on the island's sloping south-facing côtils, it is exported to Britain each spring and became the chief cash crop of Jersey farming. It has protected designation of origin status in the United Kingdom.
