Jianzhou Jurchens

The Jianzhou Jurchens were one of the three main groups into which the Ming dynasty divided the Jurchen peoples of Manchuria, living in the mountains east of Liaodong. From 1583 their chief Nurhaci united the Jianzhou and then the other Jurchen groups, organising them into the Eight Banners and founding the Later Jin in 1616. In 1635 his son Hong Taiji renamed the Jurchens Manchus, and the state became the Qing dynasty.
