Joan III, Countess of Burgundy

1308–1347 · 14th century

Joan III was countess of Burgundy (the Franche-Comté) and of Artois from 1330 until her death in 1347, the eldest daughter of King Philip V of France. In 1318 she married Duke Odo IV of Burgundy, uniting the duchy and the Free County of Burgundy under one ruling couple. Their grandson Philip I inherited both, but his death in 1361 ended the Capetian dukes.
