Joanna la Beltraneja

1462–1530 · 16th century

Joanna la Beltraneja was the daughter of Henry IV of Castile, whose enemies claimed she was the child of the courtier Beltrán de la Cueva. Backed by her uncle Afonso V of Portugal, she contested the throne with Isabella I in the War of the Castilian Succession of 1475–1479. After the Treaty of Alcáçovas she lived in Portugal until her death.
