John Boyd Dunlop

1840–1921 · 19th century

John Boyd Dunlop was a Scottish-born veterinary surgeon in Belfast who in 1888 developed a practical pneumatic tyre, first for his son's tricycle. Its rapid adoption for bicycles and then motor cars created a huge world demand for rubber, which drove the brutal exploitation of wild rubber in the Congo Free State and the Amazon.
