John III of Sweden

1537–1592 · 16th century

John III of Sweden was a son of Gustav Vasa who received the Duchy of Finland in 1556. His independent foreign policy and marriage to the Polish princess Catherine Jagiellon led his brother Eric XIV to imprison him. He deposed Eric in 1568 and reigned as king until 1592, and his son Sigismund also became king of Poland.
