John Law

1671–1729 · 18th century · Also known as John Law (economist)

John Law was a Scottish economist and financier who became controller-general of finances in France. In 1716 he founded the Banque Générale, later the Banque Royale, which issued paper money, and he headed the Mississippi Company, which controlled trade with Louisiana. Speculation in its shares produced the Mississippi Bubble, whose collapse in 1720 ruined many investors and forced Law to flee France; he died in Venice.
