John Troglita

fl. 530s–550s · 6th century · Also known as Iohannes Troglita

John Troglita was a Byzantine general sent by Justinian I to North Africa in 546, after Berber revolts and army mutinies had shaken the new Praetorian Prefecture of Africa. In campaigns from 546 to 548 he defeated the Laguatan and the Moorish leader Antalas, restoring Byzantine control. His wars are celebrated in the Latin epic Iohannis by the poet Corippus, a main source for Berber peoples of the time.
