José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia

1766–1840 · 19th century · Also known as Dr Francia, El Supremo

José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia was a lawyer and theologian who led Paraguay after independence. He became dictator in 1814 and perpetual dictator in 1816, ruling as El Supremo until his death in 1840. He kept the country largely closed to foreign trade and travel, confiscated church lands and broke the power of the Spanish-descended elite.
