Joseph Haydn

1732–1809 · 18th century

Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer, one of the founders of the Classical style. For nearly thirty years he served the Esterházy princes, developing the symphony and the string quartet, and he later won great success in London. His works include over a hundred symphonies, the oratorio The Creation and the melody of the 'Emperor's Hymn' of 1797, now the German national anthem. He was a friend of Mozart and a teacher of Beethoven.
