Joseph Howe

1804–1873 · 19th century

Joseph Howe was a Nova Scotian journalist and politician. As editor of the Novascotian he won a landmark libel case in 1835 that strengthened freedom of the press, and he led the reformers who achieved responsible government in Nova Scotia in 1848, the first in the British colonies overseas. He opposed Confederation and led a repeal campaign but joined the federal cabinet in 1869 and was briefly lieutenant governor in 1873.
