Black Loyalists

The Black Loyalists were people of African descent, many formerly enslaved, who sided with Britain in the American Revolutionary War in return for promises of freedom. About 3,000 were evacuated to Nova Scotia in 1783, settling at Birchtown and elsewhere, but faced poor land and discrimination. In 1792 about 1,100 of them sailed to Sierra Leone and founded Freetown.
