Bai Bureh

c. 1840–1908 · 19th century

Bai Bureh was a Temne ruler and war leader in northern Sierra Leone who led the Hut Tax War of 1898 against British rule. Opposing the new tax on dwellings in the protectorate, his fighters waged a skilled guerrilla campaign for months before he surrendered. The British exiled him to the Gold Coast, but he was allowed to return in 1905 and is now a national hero.
