Sierra Leone Creole people

Also known as Krio people

The Sierra Leone Creoles, or Krio, are descendants of the freed slaves who settled in Freetown from 1787: Black Poor from London, black Nova Scotians, Jamaican Maroons and tens of thousands of Africans liberated from slave ships by the Royal Navy. Protestant and English-educated, they dominated the colony's professions and trade, and their English-based Krio language is Sierra Leone's lingua franca.
