Juan Calfucurá
Juan Calfucurá was a Mapuche leader who crossed from Araucanía to the Argentine pampas around 1835 and seized control of the Salinas Grandes salt flats. From there he built a powerful confederation of pampas peoples that raided the Argentine frontier for decades. Argentine forces defeated him at San Carlos in 1872, and he died the following year.
