Julio Argentino Roca

1843–1914 · 19th century

Julio Argentino Roca was an Argentine general and statesman, twice president of Argentina, from 1880 to 1886 and from 1898 to 1904. As minister of war he led the Conquest of the Desert of 1878–1879, which destroyed the independence of the Mapuche, Ranquel and other peoples of the pampas and opened Patagonia to settlement. His presidencies consolidated the long dominance of the National Autonomist Party.
