Battle of Curupayty

1866 · 19th century · Part of the Paraguayan War

The Battle of Curupayty was fought on 22 September 1866 in southern Paraguay, when allied Argentine and Brazilian troops under Bartolomé Mitre assaulted Paraguayan entrenchments near Humaitá. The attack failed with several thousand allied casualties against very light Paraguayan losses, the worst allied defeat of the war, and it stalled the allied advance for more than a year.
