1508–1560 · 16th century · Also known as Juan de Salazar de Espinosa

Juan de Salazar de Espinosa was a Spanish conquistador who founded Asunción, the capital of Paraguay, on 15 August 1537 as a fort on the Paraguay river, during the search for the missing explorer Juan de Ayolas. The fort became the centre of Spanish settlement in the Río de la Plata region after the first Buenos Aires was abandoned in 1541.
