Juan Negrín

1892–1956 · 20th century

Juan Negrín was a Spanish physiologist and Socialist politician who served as prime minister of the Second Republic from May 1937 to the end of the Civil War. He centralised the war effort, relied on Soviet aid and argued for resistance in the hope that a wider European war would save the Republic. He led the government in exile until 1945 and died in Paris.
