Enrique Líster

1907–1994 · 20th century

Enrique Líster was a Spanish Communist commander in the Spanish Civil War, a former stonemason who rose to lead the 11th Division and later an army corps of the Republic. In August 1937 his troops dissolved the anarchist Regional Defence Council of Aragon, arresting its leaders and breaking up collectives. After the war he lived in exile, mainly in the Soviet Union, and returned to Spain after Franco's death.
