Enrico Pescatore

13th century · 13th century · Also known as Henry, Count of Malta

Enrico Pescatore was a Genoese adventurer and corsair who held the title Count of Malta. After the Fourth Crusade, with Genoese backing, he occupied much of Crete around 1206 in defiance of Venice, which had bought the claim to the island. Venice drove him out in a war lasting until about 1211–1212 and then colonised the island. He later served Emperor Frederick II as admiral.
