El Greco

1541–1614 · 16th century · Also known as Domenikos Theotokopoulos

El Greco, born Domenikos Theotokopoulos at Candia in Venetian Crete, was a painter who trained in the Cretan school of icon painting before working in Venice and Rome. From 1577 he settled in Toledo in Spain, where he produced his greatest works, including The Burial of the Count of Orgaz. His elongated figures, vivid colours and visionary religious intensity made him one of the most individual artists of the Spanish Renaissance.
