Bartolomé Esteban Murillo

1617–1682 · 17th century

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was a Spanish Baroque painter from Seville, where he spent almost his entire career. He was celebrated for gentle religious paintings, especially of the Immaculate Conception, and for scenes of street children, and in 1660 he helped found an academy of painting in Seville. His soft style made him the best-known Spanish painter abroad until the nineteenth century.
