early 17th century · 17th century

Erotokritos is a verse romance in the Cretan dialect of Greek written by Vitsentzos Kornaros in the early 17th century under Venetian rule. Its more than 10,000 rhyming fifteen-syllable lines tell of the love of Erotokritos for the princess Aretousa and his trials to win her. The greatest work of the Cretan Renaissance, it remained widely known and recited in Greece for centuries.
