Jules Gros

1829–1891 · 19th century

Jules Gros was a French journalist and geographer whom adventurers in Paris named president for life of the Republic of Counani in 1886. The republic was proclaimed in territory disputed between France and Brazil in the Guiana region, but Gros never visited it, and the state existed mainly on paper in Paris. France disowned the scheme in 1887.
