Kabayama Hisataka

1558–1634 · 17th century

Kabayama Hisataka was a samurai of the Shimazu clan of Satsuma who commanded the invasion of the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1609. With about 3,000 men he took the Amami Islands and Nakijin Castle and then advanced on Shuri, where King Shō Nei surrendered. The conquest made Ryukyu a vassal state of Satsuma while it continued to send tribute to China.
