Shō Nei

1564–1620 · 17th century · Also known as Sho Nei

Shō Nei was king of Ryukyu from 1589 to 1620, in the Second Shō dynasty. In 1609 the Shimazu clan of Satsuma invaded his kingdom; he surrendered Shuri Castle and was taken to Japan, where he was presented to the Tokugawa shoguns. He returned in 1611 after accepting Satsuma's overlordship, and Ryukyu remained a vassal of Satsuma while continuing tribute to China.
