Oyake Akahachi

d. 1500 · 15th century

Oyake Akahachi was a chieftain on Ishigaki Island in the Yaeyama Islands who led resistance to the Ryukyu Kingdom at the end of the fifteenth century. He refused tribute and rejected Shuri's interference in local religion, and in 1500 King Shō Shin sent a large fleet that defeated and killed him. The victory brought the Yaeyama Islands firmly under Shuri, and Akahachi is honoured locally as a hero.
