Yaeyama Islands

The Yaeyama Islands are the southernmost island group of Japan, in Okinawa Prefecture, lying east of Taiwan and including Ishigaki and Iriomote. Their chiefs were brought under the Ryukyu Kingdom after King Shō Shin defeated Oyake Akahachi in 1500. Under Satsuma's overlordship from 1609 the islands bore a heavy poll tax, abolished only in 1903.
