5th century · 5th century

Kala Wewa is a large ancient reservoir in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, built by King Dhatusena in the 5th century. Formed by a long earthen dam across the Kala Oya, it fed the Jaya Ganga canal, which carried water some 87 kilometres to the city of Anuradhapura. It is still used for irrigation.
