Kalfun

9th century · 9th century

Kalfun was the leader of the Arab and Berber soldiers, probably from North Africa, who seized the southern Italian port of Bari around 847. Some of them had served as mercenaries for the rival Lombard princes of Benevento and Salerno. He is regarded as the first ruler of the Emirate of Bari, though he does not seem to have held the title of emir.
