Kalevala
The Kalevala is the Finnish national epic, compiled by Elias Lönnrot from oral folk poetry he collected in Finland and Karelia. First published in 1835 and enlarged in 1849, its poems tell of the creation of the world and of heroes such as Väinämöinen. It shaped the Finnish literary language and national movement and inspired artists such as Jean Sibelius and Akseli Gallen-Kallela.
