Kalinga War
The Kalinga War was the Maurya Empire's conquest of Kalinga under Ashoka, dated on the site to 261 BCE. Ashoka's own edicts record the great loss of life it caused. His remorse is traditionally linked to his turn to Buddhism and his policy of rule by dhamma.
