Kalinga
Kalinga was an ancient region on the eastern coast of India, roughly corresponding to present-day Odisha. It was conquered by the Maurya emperor Ashoka in a bloody war. The suffering caused by the conquest is traditionally said to have led Ashoka to embrace Buddhism and non-violence.
