Hathigumpha inscription

c. 1st century BCE · 1st century BCE

The Hathigumpha inscription is a long Prakrit inscription in Brahmi script carved in the 'Elephant Cave' on Udayagiri hill near Bhubaneswar, probably in the 1st century BCE. It records year by year the deeds of Kharavela, king of Kalinga of the Mahameghavahana dynasty, including campaigns against Magadha and the recovery of a Jain image taken by a Nanda king. It is the main source for his reign.
