Karanis

Karanis was a farming town in the north-east of the Faiyum in Egypt, founded in the third century BCE under the Ptolemies and inhabited until late antiquity. Excavations by the University of Michigan from 1924 uncovered houses, granaries, temples and thousands of papyri and everyday objects, giving an unusually detailed picture of village life in Roman Egypt.
