Kilkenny Castle

c. 1200 · 13th century

Kilkenny Castle is a castle above the River Nore in Kilkenny, Ireland, first built for William Marshal in the early 13th century on the site of an earlier Norman fortification. James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormond, bought it in 1391, and it became the main seat of the Butler earls and dukes of Ormond. The family kept it until 1967, when it was handed to the people of Kilkenny.
