Butler dynasty
The Butler dynasty was an Anglo-Norman family in Ireland descended from Theobald Walter, who held the hereditary office of butler of Ireland from 1185. As earls, later marquesses and dukes, of Ormond they dominated Kilkenny and Tipperary and were the great rivals of the FitzGeralds. They owned Kilkenny Castle from 1391 until 1967.
