Jacobitism

1688–1746 · 17th century

Jacobitism was the movement to restore the Catholic king James II of England and his Stuart descendants to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland after his overthrow in 1688. Its supporters, the Jacobites, fought the Williamite war in Ireland and rose in Scotland in 1689, 1715, 1719 and 1745. Defeat at Culloden in 1746 ended it as a military force.
