Jacobo Árbenz

1913–1971 · 20th century

Jacobo Árbenz was a Guatemalan army officer and politician who was president of Guatemala from 1951 to 1954. A leader of the revolution of 1944, he carried out a land reform that expropriated uncultivated land of large estates, including that of the United Fruit Company. Accused of communist sympathies, he was overthrown in 1954 by a coup organised by the American CIA, and died in exile.
