King George Sound

King George Sound is a large natural harbour on the south coast of Western Australia, on which the town of Albany stands. George Vancouver named it in 1791, and in 1826 Britain set up a military garrison there to forestall French claims, the first European settlement in Western Australia. It later became a coaling port and an assembly point for Australian troops sailing to the First World War.
